Helen Fernandez is a Mexican writer and director raised between the U.S. and Mexico, forever navigating the pull between her Mexican roots and American influences. You can spot her instantly—always chewing gum nervously and perpetually teetering on the edge of anxiety. Think Liz Lemon, if Liz Lemon was Latina and mostly listened to Bad Bunny on repeat.
Fernandez channels her cultural duality into her writing, crafting stories about unconventional women, messy family dynamics, and the occasional dose of surrealist humor. Recently, Helen staffed on NBC’s hit comedy Happy’s Place, starring Reba McEntire and Belissa Escobedo. Her journey began back in 2015, when she landed a coveted PA position on Nathan For You—her favorite comedy at the time—before moving on to TV development at Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Prior to being a Staff Writer, she spent three years as Justin Spitzer’s assistant on the NBC comedy St. Denis Medical, where she learned about the intricacies of show running. In addition to writing, Fernandez produces and directs the monthly sketch comedy show Single Riders Only.
