The Sleep Show is bizarre and beautiful; thought-provoking and life-affirming ★★★★★ Broadway Baby
As well as being completely hilarious, The Sleep Show will fill your heart ★★★★★ Three Weeks
Following the success of performing a month-long run to packed audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, award winning writer, performer and comedian ROB AUTON embarks on a UK tour with The Sleep Show today (7th September) which includes a run at the Soho Theatre from 21st-24th September. Having explored the colour yellow in 2012’s The Yellow Show, the sky in 2013’s The Sky Show, faces in 2014’s The Face Show and water in 2015’s The Water Show, ROB has now turned his attention to sleep and from September 2016 to April 2017 will perform in theatres around the UK a show suitable for anybody who has slept.
York-born ROB has continued to build an audience through having ideas, writing them down and standing up and saying things at comedy, poetry and theatre nights since 2008. ROB’S unique world view has been acknowledged by the Arts Foundation through being shortlisted for the prestigious Spoken Word Award (2015). He was 2014’s Glastonbury Festival’s official ‘Poet in Residence’, has had two collections of writing and illustrations published by Burning Eye books, had his poetry turned into short films which were shown on Channel 4 and starred in and co-wrote the short film The Peamaster which was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2012 Milan Film Festival.
Alongside performing solo, ROB co-organises and takes part in the best poetry gig in the UK (voted by The Times) Bang Said The Gun, which after a brief hiatus transferred to the Bloomsbury Theatre earlier this year with a sell-out monthly residency and is set to have its biggest poetry extravaganza to date at the Leicester Square Theatre on the 5th October. Starting as an antidote to dreary poetry and even drearier poetry nights, the spoken-word club night’s raucous and anarchic spirit attracts a rich mix of new talent and some of the most established names in poetry/music including SIR ANDREW MOTION, KATE TEMPEST and JARVIS COCKER.
In 2013 ROB won the Dave Funniest Joke of The Fringe award with a gag about Chinese Wispas. On the day the news broke, he spoke to VANESSA FELTZ on BBC Radio 2, the conversation resulting in her saying “that’s just sad” a quote that will stick with him forever.
WHAT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT ROB AUTON:
He is entirely compelling to watch. He’s a poet/writer/talker and it’s funny in parts but that’s not the point – there is something else happening, I’m not entirely sure what it is but it’s great and it wallops you in the belly Daniel Kitson
