First there was David Attenborough… then Al Gore… now the “attractively impish” (Guardian) Dr Matt Winning presents his brand new hour, It’s The End Of The World As We Know It, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 31st July to 25th August at 4:25pm at the Pleasance Below.
In a current declared state of climate emergency, schoolchildren are striking on the streets and a slew of Extinction Rebellion protests are dominating the headlines. We’ve just experienced the four warmest years in recorded human history, and on the back of the warmest February the UK has experienced on record, Matt is storming the festival in a bid to educate and entertain us with his new storytelling lecture about how to cope with the end of the world as we currently know it. The Paisley professor will humanise our planetary predicament with his unique blend of bite-sized environmentalism, short stories, and some compelling slide show transitions.
Matt will soon appear on a BBC Three documentary about climate change, and has been featured on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4 extra, BBC Scotland, BBC Radio Scotland, and as the Environmental Correspondent on Unspun with Matt Forde (Dave). This summer will see the release of Matt’s own independent podcast, Operation Earth, and he is also the co-creator of the cult hit Bearpit Podcast Podcast. Matt first appeared at the Fringe as part of renowned showcase The Comedy Zone in 2013. Then, following the success of his first climate-change themed show Filibuster in 2017, the next year Matt received great critical success with his 4th Edinburgh hour, the funny yet educational show Climate Strange. 2019’s It’s The End Of The World As We Know It promises no different.
Away from comedy Matt is an environmental economist at the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. As an academic he provides economic analysis and modelling on subjects such as climate change and the circular economy, which is less funny but more societally beneficial than his stand-up.
