Following a sell-out run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, musical comedy duo Flo & Joan – creators of viral hit The 2016 Song – will perform their latest show The Kindness of Stranglers at the Soho Theatre from 12th – 14th February.
Sisters by birth and colleagues by choice/necessity, Flo & Joan (a.k.a. Nicola and Rosie Dempsey) have been performing together since they were old enough to write jaunty melodies, combine them with clever wordplay, and then perform them on stage (around two years ago). Following their 2016 Fringe debut Victory Flaps (recorded and released as an album earlier this year), Nicola and Rosie return in The Kindness of Stranglers with more feel-good songs about suicide, sausages and the state of the world, as they try again to make things seem slightly less depressing than they have evidently become.
Flo & Joan’s viral hit The 2016 Song has been viewed over 40 million times on social media and was featured on websites including Comedy Central (where it was video of the day), A.V. Club, Glamour and Stylist. Having spent two years working with the renowned improv company Second City in Toronto, Nicola and Rosie have recently settled back in the UK, where they have appeared on BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show and Fresh from the Fringe, written for Newsjack on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and established a monthly residency at London’s Brasserie Zedel. In 2016 and 2017 they were part of the Best of the Fest selections at both the Montreal and Toronto Sketchfests, also winning the Now Audience Choice Award in Toronto. Their Canadian TV credits include CBC’s flagship comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and they have recorded a series of videos for CBC Online.
