2009 National Tour

Sharp-witted stand-up comic ALUN COCHRANE, recognised for his recent TV appearances on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC ONE) and his return as a panellist on popular satirical comedy show Mock The Week (BBC TWO) is to embark on a national tour with his new show, Alun Cochrane is a daydreamer (at night). Hot on the heels of his stand-up show at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer, ALUN will play 30 dates nationwide from 25th September 2009.

ALUN does observational comedy, and he often tells stories. Other things ALUN does that may lead to stand-up material include eating, sleeping, daydreaming, driving, being a son, father, brother, husband, friend, mortgage-holder, clothes-wearer, car-owner, radio-listener, train-traveller, door-opener (and closer), alcohol-consumer, hangover-sufferer, newspaper flicker-through-er, occasional football watcher, and general liver of life, in short; he gets material from anywhere he wanders in mind or body.

This autumn is the time to see him at his peak, like bottle-conditioned real ale ALUN feels that age (and a lie down) have fermented his flavours for the better, resulting in his best daydreaming (and comedy) form yet.

In this the new ‘age of austerity’ is the apparently daft yet deceptively well-grounded daydreaming of a Scottish Yorkshireman (who drives a Skoda on tour) exactly what people need?

In high demand on the UK and international comedy circuit, ALUN has appeared on a range of TV and radio shows including Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC TWO), Have I Got News For You (BBC ONE), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4), Just A Minute and 4 Stands Up (Radio 4) as well as various stand-up spots on Comedy Central. ALUN’s talent extends to radio hosting when 2009 saw his first foray into breakfast show broadcasting with a successful stint on XFM Manchester. In 2004 his debut Edinburgh solo show My Favourite Words in My Best Stories garnered him a handful of four and five star reviews and a Perrier Best Newcomer Award nomination to go alongside the Writer’s Guild Award for Comedy. ALUN will be taking to the stage this August at the Edinburgh Festival for his fifth solo show following four original stand-up shows in the last five years to critical and audience acclaim.

What the press has said about this show in Edinburgh 2009

"Alun Cochrane is the best, as well as the most natural stand-up I've seen at the Fringe this year. A down-to-earth, 34-year-old Northerner, he's the kind of life-affirming comic, like Frank Skinner and Michael McIntyre, who seems as if he's being funny just by being himself…By the end of the show, some people in the audience literally can't stop laughing. Expect Alun Cochrane to be filling arenas soon."
Nicholas Barber, The Independent

"He’s yet to get the definitive big break that he deserves (panel show appearances notwithstanding), but is highly rated by peers such as Daniel Kitson, and when you experience his somehow attractively dour view of the world, you’ll see why."
James Kettle, The Guardian Guide

What the press has said about this show in Edinburgh 2009 cont…

"A man gently wandering through his daydreams and ponderings may not sound like much of a way to spend an hour, but Alun Cochrane’s ability to make the little things in life a comedy goldmine is phenomenal… Cochrane eases fluidly between one-liners, surreal rants and anecdotes, with his willing audience powering him along with massive laughs. His conversational style is comforting and his links seamless in the relaxed and jovial atmosphere that he has created. The blank and dour expression which he claims is his default setting only adds to the joy of the material." * * * *
Corry Shaw, Chortle

"His set is controlled but never contrived, a testament to his exquisite timing and filled with prime laugh-out-loud stupid moments, delivered with deadpan surety which only a scathing Glasgow-born, Yorkshire-bred man could. Dreamy." * * * * *
Mark Robertson, The List

"He has, over the past years, developed a warm, genuine style of performance which tends to leave audiences happy to indulge him in whatever erratic and silly manner his mind happens to be wandering off in. Everyone likes to daydream; Alun Cochrane just happens to be better at it than most."
David Stevenson, Fest

"A lot of very funny, sharply-observed material, all linked smoothly and with a great awareness of and relationship with the audience. Although he portrays himself as a bit of a waster, Cochrane is a craftsman both in the writing and in the delivery of his material and is well worth seeing live." * * * * *
David Chadderton, The British Theatre Guide

"An hour with Alun Cochrane is an unpretentious joy, full of sublime phrasing and flights of fancy… make sure this is on your list." * * * *
Paul Fleckney, London Is Funny

"A hugely likeable performer on the cusp of comic ubiquity."
Chris Williams, Fest

Other things the press has said about Alun Cochrane

“A lot of people do observational comedy but you need a Jerry Seinfeld kind of eye for the details of life combined with a warm enough personality to pull the audience into your world to be really good at it. Alun has both of these essential qualities in spades.”
John Nicholson, Mirror

"Proper, real, funny-from-the-heart comedy"
Frank Skinner, Absolute Radio

“A master storyteller, holding the audience before dropping an exploding but simple punchline.”
Tamsin Curry, Metro

“Alun Cochrane will always be a daydreamer, in particular concocting schemes to assassinate animals… his amiable stage-manner has been honed to near-perfection [and] allied to some top-notch material.”
Brian Donaldson, List

“It’s only a matter of time before this self-deprecating, sharp-witted and hugely likeable master-comedian takes his well-deserved turn in the spotlight.”
Tim Arthur, Time Out
